Pillars of Success
High Expectations. Because we believe in the inherent dignity and potential of every child, we have high expectations for our students’ academic achievement and conduct that make no excuses based on their backgrounds or socio-economic status.
Lead with Character. Good character makes for a meaningful life and produces lasting personal and social happiness. As a result, the development of the virtues of justice, good judgment, self-control, courage, and kindness in students is a central part of our educational mission.
Results Matter. Brilla relentlessly focus on high student performance on standardized tests and other objective measures because we hold ourselves accountable for helping students develop personally and academically in ways that will enable them to succeed at the nation's best high schools and colleges.
Choice & Commitment. Students, their parents, and the faculty of Brilla College Prep choose to participate in the program. No one is assigned or forced to attend Brilla. Everyone must make and uphold a commitment to the school and to each other to put in the time and effort required to achieve success.
More Time. There are no shortcuts. Only with increased instructional time and more time on task will students be able to acquire the academic knowledge, skills, and habits that will prepare them for success in college and in life.
Teach the Best Content. All Brilla students will learn math and science while also becoming familiar with the literary and philosophical classics of Western Civilization. because of the way the traditional liberal arts convey truth, beauty, and goodness, and because children need the world’s best content in order to become good citizens and be competitive globally.
Key Design Elements
Smart Start. Students who obtain a solid literacy and math foundation are more likely to succeed in their academic and professional careers. Brilla College Prep will launch with kindergarten and 1st grade classes. Each year, Brilla will expand by adding one grade level until it serves Kindergarten through 8th grade students.
Blended-learning. Computer literacy is an essential 21st century skill. Accessible computer hardware and advanced learning software will promote individualized instruction. We will ensure that our students spend a minimum of 60 minutes of their instructional time on computers each day. This will enable teachers to spend commensurate time providing targeted small group instruction.
Literacy x2. We spend 90 minutes on literacy instruction daily. This does not include read aloud and other key times students get to have literacy in their education.
Power To Lead. The school board has selected an entrepreneurial school leader to build a team of mission-driven professionals with demonstrated teaching success and the desire to make a difference in the lives of children. The school’s faculty and staff will have the autonomy, resources, and support to grow and lead.
Parent Involvement. Brilla College Prep will provide parents/guardians with frequent communication about student and school performance, as well as monthly workshops, and other opportunities to remain involved in their child’s education.
