Overview

In the fall of 2017, Brilla College Prep Middle School opened its doors to the inaugural fifth grade class of 77 scholars. The school will grow one grade level per year until it is a full 5th – 8th grade campus in the 2020-2021 school year, serving more than 300 scholars. The school is located in the South Bronx community of Mott Haven.

Brilla Middle builds upon the progress made at Brilla College Prep Elementary – its feeder campus. We provide students with a rigorous curriculum based on the Common Core Standards and best practices learned from charter schools across the country. Through our classical approach, students are exposed to a wide range of rich, authentic texts, allowing them to build upon the core knowledge developed in their primary years. In addition to the ELA block, students innovatively engage in literacy through a non-fiction studies block, brining science and social studies to life through non-fiction texts and articles, in addition to experiential activities and labs.

At Brilla Middle, we believe that a joyful culture, built upon positive relationships and strong character, is essential in raising student outcomes. With this in mind, students begin their days in advisory, where they are able to celebrate accomplishments, share news, review and set goals, and dive deeper into our character virtues. Students have opportunities throughout the day, from specials classes to co-curricular activities, to demonstrate these virtues and interact with peers in a positive, supportive environment.
